Sculpting Miniatures

For anyone who doesn't follow me over on G+ here is a peek at what I've been doing this year. I'm teaching myself to sculpt (better) with Polymer Clay. This is one of a pair of 28mm Tong Fighters that I made.

I switched from regular Sculpey III to Super Sculpey Firm, and that made a big difference in how much detail I could get. I still need to working on getting the level of detail even more fine -- especially around the eyes, but overall I'm really pleased with how much I've improved from when I first started.

That's awesome! Looking forward to seeing your progress and the entire process.

Thanks -- I should do a big post showing all the armatures and step-by-step work. :)

Looks great. Fabric is really hard to do well (look at the old Grenadier sculpts with super-baggy sleeves, for instance).

Damn! That's a Sculpy product? Will have to get some someday. I'm nowhere near good enough to use epoxy putty, which dries faster than I can work, and I've been using regular sculpy for really simple stuff (it's too soft really and deforms too easily).

Super Sculpey Firm and metal tools (I use dental tools) make a huge difference. The most important thing though, is have a good armature with the proportions really accurate before you begin.
