PocketMod Spellbook

I really enjoy the DIY side of tabletop gaming. When I'm playing a game with miniatures I enjoy making terrain, painting figures, and putting together 3D cardstock papermodels for buildings.  Even when we're playing a game more in the Radio Theatre / Theatre of the Mind tradition I still like making props, whether they're dice towers, custom character sheets, or some kind of prop.

On Friday I stumbled upon Risus Monkey's DungeonWords! mini book of inspirational words for D&D.  The PocketMod format means you print it out on a single sheet of paper, make a single cut, then fold into into a neat little book. I think it's pretty cool and it got me thinking about other ways I could use the PocketMod format for my games.

Here's what I put together -- a mini Spellbook that's both a gaming prop and a handy reference for the spells available to a 1st level Wizard. This little book has all of the 4 spells the Wizard starts with, each on it's own page.

If you'd like to build your own mini Spellbook you can download the image file here: PocketMod Spellbook and follow the instructions for how to fold your PocketMod book.

I'm running a game at GryphCon this weekend and will bring a couple of these for the spellcasters. :)

That is really cool. I'm totally going to have to adapt this for the games I'm currently running. Imagine creating new pocket mods for lorebooks discovered as treasure! Not only do you write the darn thing on your character sheet, but you also have something to carry with you.

I like the idea that the other players at the table will see the player of the wizard looking through this little "spellbook" when they're deciding which spells to memorize, or what the effects will be during the game. :)

Isn't that just a cute little thing. :)

Would you have to reconstruct it every time you go up a level and add more spells? Or is it expandable?

It folds up with 8 "pages" -- front cover, inside front, page 1, page 2, page 3, page 4, inside back, back cover. Depending on your style you could write things in on blank pages, or even print another "book" and insert it into the first book somehow. It'll also depend on how many spells your wizard will have. By the book B/X D&D you start with 1 spell in your book at 1st level. (I don't play entirely by the book, so this one has 4 spells in it)

I'm going to use these this weekend for a convention game, so it's sort of a one-shot kind of thing. At least for me. :)

Love the spell book. Any chance you could post an editable version? I'd love to be able to edit the text. Thanks for sharing!
